Wheelchair Games
PVA presents, with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the nation's
largest annual wheelchair sports event -- the
National
Veterans Wheelchair Games. The National Veterans Wheelchair
Games, brings together more than 500 novice and experienced athletes
for a week of competition in 17 events.
First started in 1981 by the Department of Veterans
Affairs with 76 participants, the National Veterans Wheelchair
Games has become the largest annual wheelchair sporting event
in the country. Since 1985 PVA and VA have cosponsored the Games.
The Games gives veterans with disabilities an introductory experience
in a variety of wheelchair sports and also provides competition
for experienced athletes. In doing so, the Games encourages
veterans to become aware of their abilities and potential while
promoting a spirit of healthy activity and fellowship.
Each year the Games brings together more than 500 novice and
experienced athletes for a week of competition in more than
17 events, including individual sports such as archery, air
guns, track and field, swimming, and weightlifting, as well
as team sports like basketball and quad rugby. All competitors
must be veterans of the armed forces who use wheelchairs for
athletic competition.
