Sports and recreation improves lives. Moreover, sport and recreation transcend the traditional understanding of disability from helpless to hopeful, from dire to possible, from sadness to enjoyment. Participating in a sport helps a person physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. For people with disabilities, sports have benefits not only during rehabilitation but throughout life. PVA's sports and recreation program promotes a range of activities, with special

VA Publications invites you to visit the new SPORTS ’N SPOKES Web site!

The site is not a duplicate of the magazine’s content. Although it contains portions of the same articles and information, it includes material not found in the magazine, as well some some exciting interactive features. Some of the content is changed frequently, in contrast with the hardcopy, which is published six times per year. There is no charge for the Web version, which you will find at www.SportsNSpokes.com or www.pvamagazines.com/sns.

SPORTS ’N SPOKES goes to more than 40 countries and is the world’s premier publication for disabled sports. Consequently, we have worked to maintain that reputation and made the site unique by adding the capability to translate article text into many languages. Go to the upper left corner of the home page and click on the language you desire; you will be able to read the articles in that language. This will significantly enhance the ability of our foreign readers and members of PVA who are more comfortable in a language other than English to enjoy the world of disabled sports.

This effort is the culmination of more than two years of work, and we will continue to improve the site by incorporating suggestions from our consumers. It is consistent with PVA’s reputation to be on the cutting edge in all its programs.

We hope you enjoy your experience, and we welcome feedback.

Did you know that there are 21 million Americans with a physical disability? Shockingly, less than 10 percent of them participate in daily physical activity. Nike and U.S. Paralympics want to identify and increase the number of persons with physical disabilities active in sport by making them aware of Paralympic organizations in their community.

PARALYMPIC MILITARY SPORTS PROGRAM IN BOULDER!
City of Boulder Parks and Recreation EXPAND Program
(Exciting Programs, Adventures, and New Dimensions)

Excitingly, the EXPAND program was recently awarded an U.S. Paralympic Military Sports grant to provide sports to injured service members, which will include quad rugby and track and field. Any level and type of physical injury will be accommodated.

Veterans will be introduced to adaptive sports techniques and opportunities through FREE clinics led by Paralympic athletes, who have gone through similar experiences by overcoming their own physical disabilities to achieve excellence. We are also planning a kickoff event in February of 2009 that will be held on the CU campus.

The program is not just about sports; it is also about attitude, camaraderie and promoting healthy, active lifestyles. The Disabled Sports USA recently engaged the polling and research company, Harris Interactive, to conduct polls that asked people with disabilities, Disabled Sports USA members, and Wounded Warriors their opinions in relation to sports, employment, and other quality of life markers. The Disabled Sports USA members and the Wounded Warriors, who had engaged in sports rehabilitation services from the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project, consistently scored higher in quality of life indicators such as, life satisfaction, sociability, better physical health, as well as having a higher employment rate than that of the general disabled population.
