Plans for the state-of-the-art replacement VA medical center in Denver are moving quickly. The Joint Venture Team (JVT) is working diligently to keep the project on schedule and within budget. The VA is using an integrated design construct model which means the construction company collaborates with the architect/engineer team during the design phase of the project (instead of receiving the design after the plans have been finalized). On September 2nd, the VA announced Kiewit – Turner as the construction contractor for the building of the hospital. Kiewit – Turner has already joined the design process that is currently in progress. The design phase is tentatively scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
The hospital is laid out along a spine with several buildings protruding off the walkway. The spine is designed as an open market with restaurants and shops for hospital visitors. The Spinal Cord Injury/Disease (SCI/D) Center will be located on the first floors of the two inpatient buildings, which are located on the east side of the spine on Fitzsimons Parkway, just south of 17th Place. There are 30 inpatient beds in the SCI/D Center, as well as an outpatient rehabilitation clinic.
