Handcycles weigh up to 40 pounds, and a good cycler will average 15 to 18 miles per hour, with downhill coasting peaking at about 50 mph. Several models are available: most cost between $2,000 and $3,000. If you want to try before you buy, cruise the Abilities Expos or contact a local rehabilitation center or the VAMC.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Paralyzed Veterans and Pepsi want to remind you to save the date of June 13, 2010 for the Paralyzed Veterans/Pepsi Wheelchair Championship Survivor Harbor 7 mile race in Baltimore, Maryland. The 7 mile race is a point to point race offering great cash and other prizes for both racing wheelchairs and handcycles.

We are planning on paying more than 3 deep in each category for the June 13 race.

It’s an awesome race in Downtown Baltimore and something that shouldn’t be missed. Last year we had 29 wheelchair athletes, let’s spread the word and make it 35 or more.

A cool get together on Saturday night is being planned as well.

Beginning on January 1, for a select number of participants, the price of the race will be $7 and then will go up to $14 for the next so many participants and on up to $28. So, watch the website for discounted entries beginning on January 1.

Call Geoff Hopkins at 202.416.7736 or email at geoffh@pva.org if you have questions.
