About Us
Mountain States Chapter
of the Paralyzed Veterans of America is a congressionally
chartered, veterans service organization specializing
in assisting and promoting a full lifestyle for veterans
affected by spinal cord injury or neurological disease.
We are an IRS, tax-exempt - 501 (c) 3 organization.
All personal contributions are therefore tax deductible.
The Paralyzed Veterans of America was formed in 1946. Mt. States Chapter is
one of 34 chapters of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, a national organization,
headquartered in Washington, DC. Mt. States Chapter (MSCPVA) received its charter
in 1955 and has served paralyzed veterans in our region (Colorado, Montana,
Wyoming & Utah) since its inception.
OUR MISSION
The Key Objective of PVA is to take those actions necessary to restore spinal
cord injured or diseased veterans' bodies and life potentials as closely as
is humanly possible to those Americans not suffering spinal cord dysfunction.
This is accomplished by the coordinated efforts of the PVA organization through
programs:
- To advocate for and monitor the delivery of high
quality and appropriate health care benefits and
services.
- To assist in identifying and securing veterans'
benefits and other benefits for spinal cord injured
and diseased veterans and others as appropriate.
- To promote medical research to cure spinal cord
dysfunction and other related problems.
- To educate society on the attitudinal, physical
and legal barriers which confront persons with
disabilities and to influence the removal of those
barriers.
- To provide information to and opportunities for
health promotion, recreation, employment, sports,
services, and camaraderie for spinal cord injured
and diseased veterans and others as appropriate.
- To provide for cooperation with and seek the
support of other groups and individuals who share
PVA's objectives.
- To acquaint the public with the current and ongoing
needs and current and past contributions of America's
veterans.
- To acquaint the public with simple and effective
means for reducing the risk of preventing spinal
cord injury.
- To promote involvement of the public in national
and local activities that support PVA's mission.
PROGRAMS
MSCPVA services our membership by providing a variety of programs that fulfill
our organizational mission. In specific, MSCPVA is mandated by charter to discharge
(8) eight nationally directed programs:
- Administration
MSCPVA maintains an administrative office in Colorado, with field representatives
in Montana, Wyoming and Utah to service the needs and interests of our
membership.
Advocacy
MSCPVA advocates for our members and the disabled community by remaining
cognizant of local and national disability issues. We remain actively vigilant
in assisting and representing our members regarding anything affecting
their civil rights when issues regarding disability arise. MSCPVA also
maintains a vocal and visible presence on disability related issues in
the community. We strive to vocally promote fair opportunity and equal
access.
Communications
MSCPVA maintains active communication with our membership and the disabled
community through a variety of resources. MSCPVA hosts an active website
that provide service links to a variety of disability resources. We also
produce a periodic newsletter, hold meetings of the membership and work
with local disability organizations to ensure national and local information
regarding disabled issues are provided to our membership.
Fundraising
MSCPVA conducts active and passive fundraising for a various sponsored
programs. We accomplish via our website, through specific grant applications
and from private donations. Money raised goes directly to support our programs,
our members, and sustain the ongoing needs or the organization.
Liaison/Service
MSCPVA serves to coordinate and communicate with the Department of Veterans
Affairs, VA Health Center and other veteran's health services which directly
affect our membership. MSCPVA currently has full-time National Service
Officers to interact with our members, thus ensuring they receive their
entitled benefits. We assist and remain available to assist our members
as requested.
Membership
MSCPVA maintains an active membership base throughout our region. We provide
membership opportunity to qualified veterans (full members) and those interested
in our programs (associate members). We actively pursue new members, volunteers
and supporters.
Sports & Recreation
MSCPVA maintains an active sports and recreation program for our members,
and the disabled in our region. This program provides tangible health benefits,
support, opportunity and camaraderie for all involved. MSCPVA provides
grants to our members and associate members to participate in a variety
of recreational programs.
